In September, the outer areas of the
grounds and gardens are tested for deer tolerance as we enter our driest
season. Some of the top plants to consider are scented geraniums,
catmint, and Spanish lavender. In the display gardens, shade-loving
Plectranthus is at its best with striking purple foliage and amethyst
flowers. Also in the shade, ligularia tussilaginea (crested leopard),
Houttuynia cordata variegata, and red impatiens make a spectacular color
combination surrounding our moss-covered water feature known fondly as
"the brain," a large piece of brain coral found on the property years
ago and plumbed to become a favorite of the local bird population. The
Butterfly Garden features rich, deep orange-red helenium.
