At the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, there's always something happening. Here's the winter "schedule" for these furry giants: In January, females continue to arrive, with a peak in birthing during the last half of the month. In February, the last births occur as some females are weaning pups born in January, then mating and leaving the beach. Mating peaks around Valentine's Day. In March, the last adults leave. Weaned pups remain onshore and explore nearshore waters. Pups fast for 8-10 weeks.
